Living Thin: One Woman's Journey from Penniless to Prosperous in a Year

Description

Maggie Rose is 29, single and perpetually broke. With a weakness for this season's must-haves, good food and good wine, money is something that Maggie spends, not saves. But with mounting credit card debt, her job at the newspaper failing to support her lifestyle and the man of her dreams in love with someone else, Maggie finds herself desperate to tighten her belt and get a healthy relationship with her finances. With the support of her friends, some professional advice and a little thing called eBay, can Maggie change her ways and live thin? Living Thin is a funny and light-hearted tale that will help you learn how to budget, pay off debt and save money...and still have a life!

Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was educated in Dublin and Oxford and became the leading exponent of the new Aesthetic Movement. His work, including short fiction such The Happy Price (1888), his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), gradually won him a reputation, which was cemented by his phenomenally successful plays, including A Woman of No Importance (1893), An Ideal Husband (1895) and The Importance of Being Earnest (1895). Imprisoned for homosexual acts, he died after his release, in exile in Paris. If you enjoyed The Importance of Being Earnest and Other Plays, you might like George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, also available in Penguin Classics. 'Beneath the wit there is always an intense emotional reality. He criticised his audience while he entertained it' Peter Hall, Guardian 'To the white men in the waterside business and to the captain of ships he was just Jim - nothing more. He had, of course, another name, but he was anxious that it should not be pronounced.' Lord Jim tells the story of a young, idealistic Englishman - 'as unflinching as a hero in a book' - who is disgraced by a single act of cowardice while serving as an officer on the Patna, a merchant-ship sailing from an Eastern port. His life is blighted: an isolated scandal assumes horrifying proportions. An older man, Marlow, befriends Jim, and helps to establish him in Patusan, a remote Malay settlement. There he achieves a kind of peace, but his courage is put to the test once more. Lord Jim is one of the most profound and rewarding psychological novels in English. Set in the context of social change and colonial expansion in late Victorian England, it embodies in Jim the values and the turmoil of a fading empire. In his introduction and notes to this new edition Jacques Berthoud explores the social and cultural dynamics that inform the novel.
